Practical Housing Units

Do you offer or fund the following types of service?
• Housing Related Support
• Structured Day Programme
• Floating Support
• An Accredited Tenancy Scheme
• A Life skills Course

If the answer is yes to any of these then with very little additional work the Amber PHUs could help you achieve your objectives and measure your performance for funders, including Supporting People. Delivery of the units can help your service meet targets and goals as they:
• can be used to evidence the National SP Outcomes Framework
• can be mapped to individual service users Needs Assessment and Support Plans
• evidence the support / services offered by providers
• can be used as part of a toolkit for the practitioner – easy to follow / user friendly
• encourage ownership by the service user and promote empowerment
• currency outside of organisation – Nationally Accredited
• an incentive to Private Sector Landlords and RSL’s – help to remove barriers faced in accessing ‘move on’ accommodation
• provide an auditable trail of support
• provide a consistent approach to developing life skills

The units are delivered by appropriately trained staff. Amber provides a training programme for staff, consisting of:
• One days training for all staff who will deliver the units
• A delivery toolkit and all resources to deliver the units
• On going support and mentoring for trained staff

The Units
The Practical Housing Units (PHUs), are designed to help participants of all abilities to achieve sustainable independence. It supports participants in developing the necessary skills and knowledge to maintain a tenancy, budget and lead a safe and healthy lifestyle.

The training programme consists of nine stand alone modular units, called PHUs. These are designed to be delivered to service users on an individual basis, at their own pace and in support of their individual support needs. Many of the topics are likely covered in a less structured form in support work already been done. The nine PHUs are used as a menu, only those relevant to the individual need to be delivered.

The units are as follows:
• Resettlement Issues
• Maintaining tenancy with support
• Safety and risk management in the home
• Managing utility accounts
• Budgeting and debt management
• Managing receipt of social benefits
• Maintaining a healthy diet
• Planning education, training and employment
• Developing community knowledge
• Finding accommodation

Each unit is accredited through the Assessment and Qualification Alliance (AQA) Unit Award Scheme by Practical Training, which is Amber’s AQA Training Centre.
